Originating from Central Asia, the anarkali salwar suit has been a quintessential part of Indian and South Asian culture for millennia. Worn by women across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, it has now become popular across the globe as traditional South Asian wear. Traditionally worn by women in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh within India, the salwar kameez has become a popular casual garment for all Indians. Its versatility, flexibility, comfort and elegance make it a must in every Indian woman’s wardrobe. Its various manifestations- Anarkalis, Patiala salwars, Sharara salwars and Pakistani suits have made it a popular garment for all kinds of occasions-from weddings to social functions.

The salwar suit has changed over time. Previously worn as a loose fitting garment, the modern Anarkali salwar suit has tight churidars with an ankle length kameez. The designs for the salwar suit have also changed, with modern designers now incorporating newer designs and cuts for the changing tastes of the modern Indian woman. The traditional salwar suit, consisting of a knee length kurta(top) and a loose salwar(bottoms) along with a dupatta have become popular across the country due to its comfort, versatility and use. Different regions of the country have made it their own, with local designs and stitches making the salwar kameez a part of their own culture. With the embrace of modernity, we now have young college girls and teenagers wearing kurtis with jeans sans the dupatta, which has now become an optional garment.

Salwar suits come with all types of materials -cotton, silk, georgette etc. depending on local tastes, climate and other characteristics. The designs on the salwar suits can vary from traditional embroidery to modern printed motifs with other embellishments.

The Churidar salwar suit, a modern transformation of the anarkali suit, has been wildly popular with women of all ages in India. Consisting of a kameez top and a tightly fitting pant/bottom which is extra long, the churidar gets its name due to the fact that the extra long pant folds like bangles at the ankle(‘churi’-bangles and ‘dar’-like).The kameez top these days has become much shorter, many of them till the knee. Many churidaar salwars now come with printed, multi coloured designs, with heavily embroidered and embellished designs worn for special occasions.

With much of India wearing anarkali dress, many schools and government institutions have adopted it as a uniform for girls. It has also become an accepted garment for office wear.
